Bobcats pick up win, tie against UC Santa Barbara

Texas State’s unbeaten streak extended to seven games following a weekend trip to California for a non-conference series against UC Santa Barbara.

Saturday’s match was cancelled due to inclement weather but the Bobcats and Gauchos got two games in on Sunday. Texas State took the first game, 6-5, while the final game of the weekend concluded in a 4-4 tie.

Game 1

Senior outfielder Derek Scheible led the Bobcats in game one with an early home run that led to a three-run first inning. Santa Barbara battled back in the third with three runs of its own to take a 4-3 lead. But Texas State responded with another Scheible home run and three runs plated.

Junior infielder Jaylen Hubbard contributed two runs in a 3-for-4 outing as junior infielder Ryan Newman and senior infielder Luke Sherly produced two RBIs each. While the offense battled, Junior pitcher Connor Reich earned his third victory of the season on the mound. 

Reich pitched 4.0 innings and gave up three earned runs. Junior Brayden Theriot closed the final 3.0 frames to receive his third save of the season. Theriot gave up one run on three hits with one strikeout and no walks allowed.

The Gauchos had a rough outing on the mound with starting pitcher Ben Brecht only lasting the first inning. Santa Barbara went through four pitchers en route to the 6-5 loss to Texas State.

Game 2

After eight more innings, both schools came to a 4-4 tie. The Gauchos took early leads at 1-0 and 3-1 after two innings. But Texas State put up three runs in the third to capture the lead, 4-3. Santa Barbara put up one run in the fourth and the two sides went on a four-inning drought. 

Freshman outfielder John Wurthrich recorded a season-best three hits along with two RBIs. Junior second baseman Jonathan Ortega scored one run and finished 2-for-4 in the final match of the weekend. 

Sophomore pitcher Zachary Leigh made his first weekend start, giving up four runs on six hits in four innings pitched. Senior Cam Baird, junior Kyle Bradford and junior Seth Jordan each pitched in the final four innings to hold the Gauchos scoreless on two hits, two walks and one strikeouts.

Santa Barbara starter Chris Clements gave up all four Texas State runs on six hits. Luke Andrews and Chris Troye relieved in the final 5.1 innings to hold the Bobcats scoreless. After the 4-4 tie, Texas State is now 9-4-1 on the season with Sun Belt play approaching.

The Bobcats return to San Marcos with rival UTSA set to visit Bobcat Ballpark on Tuesday. First pitch against the Roadrunners is scheduled for 6 p.m.
