Sales tax allocations up for the month in all Hays County cities

People have been spending a lot of money in Hays County recently. Every city in the county is up for spending in this allocation period compared to the same time frame last year, which is a rare occurrence. That will help the city of San Marcos catch up, as it has received $269,114 less for 2024 year to date, as compared to 2023.

Three Hays County students awarded Neal Kocurek Scholarship

College is expensive, and for many, scholarships can be life-changing, particularly when they come with one on one professional mentorship. Three Hays County high school students, including two from San Marcos High School, will now receive $7,500 per school year and receive mentorship and support services for the next four to eight years, courtesy of St. David’s Foundation. The Neal Kocurek Scholarship was awarded to 45 students. The three from Hays County are Dayannara Cruz — San Marcos High School, Eva Moore — San Marcos High School and Javeryn Gallo — Moe and Gene Johnson High School. According to Ashley Gomez, St. David’s Foundation scholarship program manager, many of the award recipients will be first generation college students and were chosen for their “exceptional personal stories.”

SMCISD sends tax rate to November ballot

The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District approved the certified appraisals from Hays County, Caldwell County and Guadalupe County and adopted the tax rate of $1.0152 per $100 of taxable value. According to SMCISD Board President Anne Halsey, this means that the November ballot will be a Voter Approved Tax Rate Election with the option to vote for or against the district receiving two additional Golden Pennies on its total tax rate, which are worth a penny a piece per $100 of taxable value.

3,000 lot development to be built on east side

A 712 acre development with nearly 3,000 planned lots called Sedona is coming to the eastside of San Marcos and will roll out in several phases, the first of which will begin in the next couple of weeks. Sedona developer John Lloyd said the “vast majority” of the development, which will be near Cottonwood Creek and divided by Lovelady Lane, will be single- family residential, but the land is zoned mixeduse commercial; 100 acres on the southwest corner of the development along Highway 123 will either be commercial and could “conceivably be some multi-family,” according to Lloyd.
