Council approves tax rate on the first of two readings

The November election will see candidates for San Marcos mayor on the ballot. Mayor Jane Hughson, will be running for re-election against current San Marcos CISD Board of Trustee Juan Miguel Arredondo. Hughson plans to run for her final term, if elected.
The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District approved the certified appraisals from Hays County, Caldwell County and Guadalupe County and adopted the tax rate of $1.0152 per $100 of taxable value. According to SMCISD Board President Anne Halsey, this means that the November ballot will be a Voter Approved Tax Rate Election with the option to vote for or against the district receiving two additional Golden Pennies on its total tax rate, which are worth a penny a piece per $100 of taxable value.
A 712 acre development with nearly 3,000 planned lots called Sedona is coming to the eastside of San Marcos and will roll out in several phases, the first of which will begin in the next couple of weeks. Sedona developer John Lloyd said the “vast majority” of the development, which will be near Cottonwood Creek and divided by Lovelady Lane, will be single- family residential, but the land is zoned mixeduse commercial; 100 acres on the southwest corner of the development along Highway 123 will either be commercial and could “conceivably be some multi-family,” according to Lloyd.
Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra reads a report from the Sheriff’s Office during Hays County Commissioners Court that outlines the jail population and outsourcing costs for the previous week. The Sheriff’s Office provided outsourcing costs for this Fiscal Year and the previous Fiscal year (except for June and July), which shows that outsourcing costs have gone up approximately half a million dollars total compared to the same time period last year.
The San Marcos City Council voted four to three to approve the annexation of 7.553 acres of land generally located on the western side of FM 1984 and approximately 4,600 feet from northeast of the intersection between SH 80 and FM 1984 for a future roadway within the AXIS Logistics Park development agreement, formerly known as the SMART Terminal, amidst pushback from some nearby Martindale residents.
